When I feel myself falling into a bit of a creative rut, I find the best way to pull myself out is to challenge myself with something new and push myself out of my comfort zone. After working on a long number of quilts with traditional block piecing or foundation paper piecing, I felt the need to switch things up.
For this project I set myself the following guidelines:
(a) no patterned fabric (this is really hard for a fabric designer)
(b) no rulers allowed in the piecing (time to embrace the curve!)
(c) play with transparency
(d) work from a simple 15 second sketch (I have refined that original sketch so that you can make use of it).
The result is a bold, energetic piece that I hope you enjoy making too! When working with curves, straight pins are your best friend. I have also found that using the Janome HP foot and plate make sewing those curves so effortless (though a 1/4” foot will work).
